Monday Makes & (Vintage) Finds: The Slytherin Vanity Set
Fall officially starts this week, and I'm feeling my Slytherin rising in anticipation of Halloween. . . which reminded me of this lovely, elegant, bakelite vanity set.
I don't know how rare it is but, in all my wanderings in antique shops, I've never seen another set in dark green bakelite. There are no brand markings on either the box or the set. I suspect that there was a sticker label on the box that has long since been lost.
I found it years ago, forgotten in some antique shop. The box has visible wear, but the inside is intact and (relatively) clean. You can tell that it was well loved, used, and cared for, because the satin on the inside of the box at the head of the brush is showing wear where the brush has been repeatedly taken out and replaced--and brushed the satin in the process.
*Note: I have not, and do not intend to use the brush on my hair. I probably could, with some gentle cleaning, but I don't want to gamble and possibly damage the bakelite or lose bristles.
Now then, please excuse me as I silently stalk the halls in flowy robes gazing wistfully into my magic mirror.
