Monday Makes & Finds: The Magician's Hat!
I'm not going to lie, things have been pretty grim around here for many reasons. . . so I decided I needed some Halloween Magic, stat.
We have a loose Olde Time-y Magician theme for the Halloween decorations in our TV room and, having a bunch of other things I should be doing, as well as a very tight budget, and needing some escapism pretty badly, I naturally decided to make a magician's hat.
I sorted through several tutorials and settled on This One which was mostly very clear and easy to follow. It (like most of the tutorials I found) is for a Mad-hatter style topper, and I was looking for something more traditional,
like this: instead of this:
I was able to adapt the instructions & measurements to get the style I wanted, so that was good. The nice man who wrote the blog assured the reader that it should take around 4 hours to complete. I allotted 2 days. I needed about a total of about 12 hours--including the time to let things dry between stages and the time to wipe glue spots off the final product. Clearly, this is not my area of expertise.
And lo!! It looks like a hat!!
Is it a little lumpy? Yes, yes it is. Did I have enough fabric & know-how to properly cover the brim? No, no I did not. Can you see the hand-stitching on the lining? Yes, yes you can. I choose to find it charming. Also: I made a hat out of a pizza box for Halloween and hand-stitched the lining! I'm quite proud of myself.
I even made glue! And it worked! And it was far easier than I'd thought it would be. (Instructions for all this can be found on the link.)
Humble beginnings:
I have to say, I learned A TON by doing this, and it was a very satisfying project.
