Costume College Recap

Costume College is over for another year.  I'm a little sad, actually.  Even though this was a majorly scaled back year for me ( I literally could not attend ANY of the social events due to family obligations, AND I wasn't teaching for the first time in about 7 years) I still had a wonderful time.  The lectures were interesting, the limited classes helped me add to my arsenal of techniques and, most importantly,  I got to catch up with friends and be inspired by all the super-talented folks who attend this con. One particularly helpful lady that I met outside the Starbucks helped me with Renaissance bodice fitting--but that's for another post.

Anyway, for various reasons I didn't make anything grand for CoCo this year, but I DID still finish a few projects that I'm very proud of, so here is a quick re-cap:

Day 1:  I was wearing a Disneybounding outfit as the Doormouse from Alice in Wonderland.  (Disneybounding is dressing in modern clothing inspired as a character from a Disney movie)

Here's the character--
And here's me all done--
And a closeup of my makeup (MAC pigments on eyes & lips) as well as mouse & teapot pins--and one for celebrating the 25th year of Costume College.

<-- Here is the group of patterns & fabrics  I used.                      and some of the fabulous bonuses I found inside the bowtie pattern.  :)
The shirt was a Make Do & Mend project:  I took one of E's shirts destined for the Goodwill, picked it apart, and used a vintage lady's blouse pattern to re-cut & re-shape the shoulders & sleeves.  I'm quite pleased!

The vest, however, gave me no end of trouble.  The origional pattern needed to be sized up, the shoulders shortened, the neckline deepened all around, darts added at the front shoulder, and at the bust--and the inexplicable darts at the back shoulder needed to be altered because they were giving me wings.  :(  I don't think I'll be using this pattern again.  So, after fighting with the mockup for a couple days, I decided to use it as a lining for my vest--it turned out to be necessary since the vest material frays unmercifully.
The fabric I was lucky to find in this nubby material shot with purple that perfectly matched my shoes--though it's a little hard to tell because of the lighting in this photo.

And that's Day 1 done!

Day 2:   The theme of this year's convention was the 1960s.  I thought it was great opportunity to make up some of the shift dress patterns I have that I can later use for work.  I managed to get one done before the convention.  Of course, it involved grading up the pattern (with some expert help from a dear friend) and a whole lot of fiddling and fitting ...

before the finished product!

Here I am bolero, bee hive & all!

Trying out some fabulous blue eyeshadow w/ cut creases a la Twiggy.  And a back view of the bee hive -->
 Day 2 sorted.
